Landscape painting forms the bulk of Peter Spohn’s work. Most of Peter's artwork are oil paintings; however some of the recent landscapes have been painted with acrylics. If you visit his gallery, you can browse his paintings from Mexico, Howe Sound and the Cowichan Valley. Peter’s older paintings are classically balanced. The more recent one’s are asymmetrically balanced with looser, more expressive brushwork. All have been informed by the rich tradition of landscape painting.
He has been influenced mostly by Cezanne but also by Edward Hopper, Edward Hughes and more recently Emily Carr. Many of his paintings contain wonderful wake-up shocks of light that transfigure for a moment the usual grayness of the westcoast landscape. It’s this celebration of light that most defines his work. He presents thoughtful compositions that give the viewer a strong sense of place and time of day.
